How it works
With all of the supplements on the market right now- it's so easy to get overwhelmed and bogged down with information and end up wasting money on something that lacks sound scientific evidence. I've recently been on a turmeric kick and was interesting in figuring out- mechanistically- how it actually works and wanted to share some of the wonderful medicinal properties.
First of all, It's a really fantastic anti-inflammatory and actually mimics the mechanism of aspirin by acting as an inhibitor (blocker) of an enzyme that promotes the inflammatory response- thus reducing inflammation. Unlike aspirin - there are many, many more clinical uses for curcumin (active compound in turmeric) and is actually beneficial for your body as a whole. The links below provide information on just how powerful turmeric is as 1) anti-inflammatory compound for asthma/ bronchial inflammation and 2) as an cellular "protector" and anti-carcinogenic (anti-cancer) compound
